Q&A: Can a Locksmith Create a Key Using the Lock?

You know you can rely on a locksmith for your key copies but is it possible to create a key using the lock itself?

When your original or spare key is broken or completely worn down, is it still possible to create a new key?

The good news is a locksmith can use a lock to create key copies.

There is always the option of replacing your locks completely, but you may want to look at using the lock to create new keys first.

There are a few different ways that a locksmith can create a key using the lock.

The first is to cut the key to code. This is one of the easiest ways to get new keys. Each key has a unique code, which can be used to shape a blank key. Unfortunately, if the locksmith doesn’t have access to this code, this method won’t work. There are ways to track the code using the lock, but this isn’t always possible.

The second option is to impression the lock, which requires specific knowledge and equipment. Impressioning a lock involves marking a blank key by turning it in the lock. The pins within the lock are what create these markings. The locksmith then knows which areas of the key need to be filed down for it to work with a particular lock. Since there are multiple pins, a locksmith needs to repeat this process several times.

The final option is to disassemble the lock, which isn’t ideal. This process is far more complex, but it is possible to disassemble the lock without damaging it. In this instance, it often makes more sense to replace the lock entirely.
