Have a key that’s stamped with “do not duplicate” and wondering what it means? Here is what you need to know.
Do Not Duplicate keys don’t mean much unless the key forms part of a registered master key system. If not, a locksmith is free to create a copy for you.
It is only registered key designs that are patent protected that cannot legally be copied.
So, what is a registered master key system anyway?
These key designs are protected and restricted for a period of 10 years and are generally linked to commercial properties or apartment complexes. Only locksmiths with explicit permission from the creator are permitted to make legal copies of these keys. What’s more, specific equipment is required to make these copies, which is why you need to find the right locksmith.
If you can’t provide a professional locksmith with written authorization to copy keys linked to registered master key systems, they cannot assist you with duplicates.
If your key is not a part of one of these systems, the Do Not Duplicate stamp is just an extra security measure. If you are not the owner of the property, it’s best to check whether the key is part of a registered system to know whether you can go ahead with the duplication – this will save you time and frustration.
If the key is part of a registered system but the 10-year patent period has passed, you are free to create copies of the key.
