Q & A: My Key Won’t Turn In the Lock, What Should I Do?

You've just realized your key won't turn in the lock. Can you fix this problem yourself or should you call a locksmith?

You’ve just arrived home, only to find your key won’t turn in the lock. There are several reasons why this could happen but either way, you have two choices. Attempt to fix the problem yourself or get a locksmith to assist you.

If you decide to try and fix the issue yourself, you could start by spraying some lubricant on the lock as this can help remove dirt and dust. This is a common problem with outdoor locks. Over time, the dirt and dust get deep into the cylinder, which can cause the pins to get stuck, preventing a key from turning.

A lubricant helps the pins move again, which means your key should work again too. You may need to insert the key a few times to move the lubricant inside the cylinder. Do this gently so that you don’t end up damaging the lock or breaking the key.

When to Call a Locksmith

If you can barely get your key into the lock, something could be blocking the cylinder completely. If spraying lubricant doesn’t seem to have had any effect, it’s time to contact Cape Coral Locksmith. You could always attempt to remove the obstruction yourself, but this will almost certainly lead to further damage. This is because you need very specific tools to be able to fix a blocked lock.

A blockage is only one of the possibilities though, the pins could also be worn out or corroded – an issue you definitely won’t be able to correct without professional assistance.

If a locksmith can’t get an existing lock to work, you may need to replace the lock cylinder entirely.
